J.P. Gifford opens eatery at former Doc’s space

KENT — Last week, the owners of the J.P. Gifford market and catering company on Route 7 in the center of Kent opened a new restaurant, Gifford’s, around the corner on Route 341 in the location that was home to Doc’s Trattoria until it closed in December.James Neunzig and his business partner, Michael Moriarty, are the principals of both Gifford locations. Neunzig and Moriarty both have cooking backgrounds; both also take care of operating the business.Neunzig described the menu at the cafe and in the new restaurant as “new American” cuisine.“Our goal is to provide good, fresh, locally sourced when possible, food with a menu that changes every eight to 12 weeks,” he said. “We always want to offer our customers new options using the freshest seasonal ingredients available.”For now, the new Gifford’s (which had its debut Feb. 20) is open Wednesday through Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. Appetizers at the restaurant range in price from $8 to $16,salads from $9 to $13 and entrees from $22 to $38. Desserts are made fresh daily by in-house pastry chef Sarah Whitton (who also bakes all the breads at the restaurant).The Gifford cafe has a luscious assortment of fried regular and sweet potatoes. The restaurant, too, will offer a pommes frites appetizer of “hand-cut crisp fries tossed with sea salt, truffle oil and cabernet veal glace reduction” at $8.In addition to more traditional offerings such as a Caesar salad and an arugula salad, Gifford’s will offer exotic fare such as a Thai green mango salad with “julienned green mango, papaya, peppers, pea shoots, butter bib lettuce and mint with roasted chopped peanuts, toasted coconut and sweet and sour vinaigrette” for $13.An entree called a Lamb Duo, offers “pancetta-wrapped pan-roasted filet of lamb and merguez lamb sausage over white bean cassoulet with a cabernet glace reduction” at $32.Gifford’s seats a total of about 85 customers at inside and outside tables.The staff will come over in part from the existing cafe and catering business. Neunzig told The Lakeville Journal, “Our front-of-house staff has been with me for 10 years. They are very friendly and service oriented.” Most worked for him when he was a partner in Moosilauke, a popular restaurant in Kent that closed a few years ago.In several weeks, after everything at the new restaurant settles into place, Neunzig will begin offering daily specials at the restaurant.One thing he is proud of is that fresh fish is delivered to Gifford’s five days each week from the Boston area as well as New York City. Some fresh fish is even flown in overnight from Honolulu.The bar will also offer “hand-crafted cocktails using mixes we’ll make daily from fresh juices only.” The wine cellar has more than 60 different wines.Gifford’s is located at 9 Maple St./Route 341, east of the traffic light in Kent. For Christians, Easter marks the end of Lenten fasting, allowing for a celebratory feast. A popular choice is roast lamb, often prepared with rosemary, garlic or lemon. It is traditional to serve mint sauce or mint jelly at the table.

The Hebrew Bible suggests that the last plague God inflicted on the Egyptians, to secure the Israelites’ release from slavery, was to kill the firstborn son in every Egyptian home. To differentiate the Israelites from the Egyptians, God instructed them to mark their doorposts with the blood of a lamb. Today, Jews, Christians and Muslims generally believe that God would have known who was Israelite and who was Egyptian without such a sign, but views of God’s omnipotence in the Abrahamic faiths have evolved over the millennia.
