LAKEVILLE — Katherine H. Chester, 87, formerly of Suffield and Glastonbury, died Monday, April 21, 2008, at Kimberly Hall in Windsor.
She was born in Lakeville, the fourth child of the late Katherine (Rogers) and Frank Hayde.
“Babe,� as she was known to her family, was a graduate of Salisbury High School in Lakeville and Vassar Brothers School of Nursing in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She began her life of travel as a registered Army nurse, serving in the European theater throughout World War II. She then spent the next 25 years traveling the world as a military wife, finally settling in Wethersfield. She later lived in Suffield and Glastonbury, where she enjoyed golfing, knitting, crocheting and playing cards. However, she most cherished time spent with her sisters, brother and two granddaughters, Sarah “Wiggy� Wagar of East Granby and Amy “Buggy� Wagar of Danbury.
Katherine is also survived by a daughter, Katherine, and her husband, Brian Wagar, of East Granby; a son, Richard Chester of Mississippi; grandchildren R.J. Chester and Kathleen Chester; a sister, Gloria Kane of Thomaston; a sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Bill Silta of Lakeville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Mary Post of Danbury and Frances Gordon of Glastonbury, and her brother, Charles Hayde of Lakeville.
Funeral services will be Saturday, April 26, at the Rose Hill Funeral home in Rocky Hill at 10 a.m. Friends and family may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m., with the service being held at 10 a.m., followed by a military burial at Neipsic Cemetery, Glastonbury.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
