Kenneth L. Hoadley

AMENIA — Kenneth L. Hoadley, 88, died March 17, 2011. He was born in South Woodstock, Vt., on Aug. 19, 1922, to the late Edith (Ransom) and Forrest H. Hoadley. He attended Rutland, Vt., schools and graduated from Becker College in Worcester, Mass.Called to active service in World War II, he served three years in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was discharged with the rank of corporal, the same rank managed by his ancestor, Thomas Hoadley, in the Revolutionary War.After military service, Mr. Hoadley resided in Wassaic and was employed as office manager by the Tri-Wall Container Corp. for 10 years and then by IBM Corp. in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., as administration manager, retiring in 1984 after 28 years.He was a member of the New York State Archaeological Association Mid-Hudson Chapter and the Appalachian and Green Mountain clubs, and retired after 57 years of service as a volunteer fireman and past president of the Wassaic Fire Company. He also served as town historian for Amenia and was on the town Assessment Review Board.He is survived by his wife of almost 69 years, Jean (Ketcham) Hoadley; two daughters, Suzanne H. O’Hearn of Dover Plains and Sandra Conlin of Wassaic; a son, Jonathan K. Hoadley of Harwinton; five grandchildren, Jeff, Sean and Jeremy O’Hearn, Kara (O’Hearn) Granger and Jennifer (Conlin) Eanes; and six great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Warren R. Hoadley.There will be no memorial service. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Woodstock, Vt., at a later date.Memorial contributions may be made to the Wassaic Fire Company, 27 Firehouse Road, Wassaic, NY 12592; or to Hospice Foundation, Inc., Memorial Gift Program, 374 Violet Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.Arrangements are under the care of Hufcut Funeral Home in Dover Plains. NORTH CANAAN — Steve Blass Little League AAA baseball opened the 2024 season on Saturday, April 27, with an afternoon match between the Giants and Red Sox.

The Giants stood tall and came out on top with a 15-7 win over their Region One counterparts, the Red Sox. Steve Blass AAA teams are composed of players aged 9 to 11 from Cornwall, Kent, Falls Village, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury and Sharon.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
