100 years ago — July 1922

Word has been received of the safe arrival of Messrs. I. Kent Fulton and Scott Flint at Los Angeles, Calif. last Sunday. They made the trip overland in Mr. Fulton’s Packard.

 

LIME ROCK — Edward Doty was in the Winsted  Hospital a few days last week, receiving treatment for a bad cut on his arm, received in the Creamery.

ORE HILL — Robert Garrison, the local sewing machine expert, reports having several calls from Vermont for his services as a repair man.

 

50 years ago — July 1972

All open burning of paper, leaves and garbage is forbidden under the new air pollution regulations issued by the Department of Environmental Protection and received in Northwest Connecticut this week. The regulations permit campfires and barbecues without permission, and certain other types of outdoor fires with local certificates in advance. They ban burning of trash under any circumstances.

 

Salisbury village families whose houses will be taken for the Village Improvement Society’s off-street shopping project will be given every assistance in obtaining other homes, members of the Society emphasized Monday evening. The Society owns a tract of about five acres east of East Railroad Street where residents can relocate if they wish, VIS Executive Director Jeffrey P. Walker told questioners. Options include moving present houses to new locations, new houses put up by residents with VIS help, or new houses erected by the Society itself.

 

The aircraft seen buzzing around Lakeville on Friday turned out to be dusting cornfields with nitrogen, used to enrich the soil. According to the Federal Aeronautics Administration, the plane is registered in the name of Kenneth Knudson. It was seen in Kent on Saturday and Sunday.

25 years ago — July 1997

A producer of popular television shows over the past year has quietly put together a series of real estate purchases totaling more than 500 acres at a cost of more than $5 million. Robert Boyett Jr., one half of Miller-Boyett Productions, which has introduced shows such as “Happy Days” and “Full House,” has purchased adjoining properties here and just across the Massachusetts state line in the Ashley Falls section of Sheffield. The properties include the historic home of the late Harrison Salisbury and acreage as well as property on Twin Lakes Road, both in Taconic, and the Malnati house and Cooper Hill farm in Ashley Falls.

 

Sue Spring was formally appointed Salisbury Town Clerk by selectmen this week. Ms. Spring, who became acting town clerk on Laura Johnson’s resignation, is in line to be the Republican nominee for the job for a full term in November’s elections.

NORFOLK — Robert J. Pallone, 69, of Perkins Street passed away April 12, 2024, at St. Vincent Medical Center. He was a loving, eccentric CPA. He was kind and compassionate. If you ever needed anything, Bob would be right there. He touched many lives and even saved one.

Bob was born Feb. 5, 1955, in Torrington, the son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Pallone.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
