100 years ago — 1921

­Salisbury is getting to be quite a center of real estate transfers at present. William Dempsey, local plumber, has purchased the tin-smith business of C.F. Wanger and will move into the house now occupied by Mr. Wanger about April first. 

— Joseph Lynch of Salisbury is spending a few days in New York City attending the annual hat show.

LAKEVILLE — Mrs. Grant Finkle is able to be out of doors again after a seven months’ illness.

50 years ago — 1971

Despite the unrelenting efforts of the Lakeville firemen aided by fire companies from Canaan and Millerton, hot flames and sub-zero temperatures were the ultimate victors early Monday morning in Taconic. By the time the sun was up, Taconic’s General Store and  Post Office had little left which was in usable condition. 

— The first under-21 voter to be registered in Salisbury was Steven Vaill Maus, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Maus of Lakeville and cousin of State Representative (R) Gordon Vaill. Steve broke a family tradition going back several generations when he registered as a Democrat.

KENT — Emery Park will have its separate wading pool for toddlers this year after all, it was revealed this week. An anonymous contribution has been made to meet the estimated cost of $2,400. The donor of funds for the project wishes to remain unidentified, First Selectman Eugene O’Meara said, and town officials will respect those wishes.

25 years ago — 1996

LIME ROCK — Bob Green of Falls Village recently purchased the Pearce Davis house in the Lime Rock section of Salisbury. In a closet, he found a small cannon ball, “the kind that was used for a field piece.” And, on a beam, after stripping off several layers, he found the date 1801. He wonders, what next?

SHARON — The call came in to the Sharon Firehouse at 9:28 p.m. Monday evening. Sharon firefighters were at the scene at 9:31. They would fight the fire at the Gordon Casey Real Estate building across from the Sharon Shopping Center until well after midnight. 

CANAAN — Water was determined to be the catalyst for last week’s fire at Specialty Minerals but its source remains a mystery. Calcium metal inside a steel drum somehow came in contact with water Wednesday afternoon.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
