SALISBURY — Mr. and Mrs. Paul Parsons and Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Ashman and daughter Edna motored to Hartford last Sunday.

 

ORE HILL — Miss Victoria Laviski has the mumps.

 

LIME ROCK — Several from here attended the hash supper in Canaan Wednesday night.

 

There is growing and flourishing in the yard at the Bradley Homestead a rose bush which according to W.P. Bradley is the oldest rose bush in the United States. Mr. Bradley states that the bush was brought from England in 1656 in a green carpet bag by Capt. Nathaniel Everts 1st. 

 

50 years ago — 1970

A musical event of unusual importance will be presented at the Congregational Church of Salisbury at the 10 a.m. on Sunday morning July 12. The internationally famous choir of St. John’s College, Cambridge, England, will lead the service. 

 

Ellen Wertheimer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Valentin Wertheimer of Lakeville and New York, left yesterday for Bombay, India, where she will spend the summer as an American Field Service exchange student.

 

The Class of 1935, Lakeville High School, thoroughly enjoyed its 35th reunion at the Interlaken Inn on June 28. Fifteen of the 29 original members of the graduating class were at the reunion, with other guests bringing the total attendance to 25. 

 

SHARON — Two Sharon men, Austin Howard Barney and Edward L. Coyle, formerly of Sherman, have purchased Anderson Motors on Route 4 and will operate a business under the name of Town and Country Motors.

 

25 years ago — 1995

The carnival in Canaan last week was hugely attractive to those still young enough to enjoy the whirling, twisting rides. Fire Chief Charles Perotti said the carnival was one of the most successful in the company’s history.

 

LAKEVILLE — Life is undeniably less complicated in a small town, a fact reinforced by a mail order purchase once made by the Rev. Dr. Charles Bevan, rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church. Dr. Bevan ordered the item over the phone and when asked for his home address, replied “it’s a small town, the address is just Main Street.” Sure enough, a package arrived, mailed to Virginia Bevan, Just Main Street, Salisbury, CT.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
