Summertime soccer at Veteran’s Field in Sharon

SHARON — Soccer enthusiasts aged 3-13 gathered at Veteran’s Field in Sharon from June 26-30 for Challenger Soccer’s summer camp.

The week-long clinic offered off-season drills and practice to young athletes looking to improve their skills over summer break.

In total, 38 campers participated in the program to receive direct instruction in dribbling, passing, shooting, and defense.

When The Lakeville Journal stopped by on June 29, campers were competing in rapid fire head-to-head showdowns.

“Today we’re working on attacking and defending 1v1,” said Coach Ellis Nugent from Challenger Soccer.

Athletes were awarded points for exhibiting skills and displaying good sportsmanship to build well-rounded soccer players.

“They have this little system devised where the kids are broken into teams through the week based on their age group. They get points if the coach notices them doing a nice gesture or if they exhibit a really good skill amd at the end of the week they do awards,” said said Matt Andrulis-Mette, director of Sharon Park and Rec.

Sharon Park and Recreation and Challenger Sports have collaborated to put on the camp for over 25 years.

“These guys run a really nice camp. The kids all have fun,” said Matt Andrulis-Mette.

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.
