Keep park name as is

Our town is currently considering to hold another referendum, spending thousands of tax dollars to determine whether or not to change the name of our historic town Green, East End Park.

Please know that I would do practically anything to support our veterans.

Having a son, a local boy,  currently Lt. Colonel USMC, commanding a unit at Camp Pendleton, California, who has served in many actions, I surely honor all of our veterans and what they have done.

Our community supports our veterans in many ways and in many places.

Just about everywhere you go in town you can see a symbol of our respect to our veterans, from Dudley Park to Soldier’s Monument, to Town Hall, The Elks Club Lodge, the Veterans of Foreign Wars building and East End Park.  The cemeteries  are decorated each year with fresh American flags honoring our veterans.

The public comes out to either march in or watch the Memorial Day Parade down Main Street to historic East End Park.

Our town Green is a beautiful park with a very nice monumental fountain and unique bandstand, with an American flag and our community Christmas tree, memorials, plus so much more.

It is the gathering place for the annual farmers markets, a community camp out to raise funds for the homeless in December, a location where all local parades end, such as the Memorial Day Parade and the Pet Parade, the place where we crown our Laurel Queen each year, Northwestern Connecticut Community College’s graduation, as well as demonstrations for peace and  the summertime concert series.

There are several strategically placed benches around the park to sit and relax, roll and play in the grass, listen to the birds, watch the traffic flow, listen to a concert, have a picnic, or to ponder over a memorial.

The many uses of this park demand a name that is well suited to represent all citizens. I urge you to vote for keeping the town Green’s name the same.  Neither changing the name nor moving  monuments to our East End Park would enhance or strengthen our bond with local veterans.

KENT – The cold temperatures and biting winds didn’t deter a crowd from gathering for the annual Veterans Day ceremony Tuesday morning, Nov. 11.

Standing in front of the memorials honoring local residents who served in the military, First Selectman Martin Lindenmayer, himself a veteran, said the day is “not only a time to remember history, but to recognize the people among us—neighbors, friends and family—who have served with courage, sacrifice and devotion. Whether they stood guard in distant lands or supported their comrades from home, their service has preserved the freedoms we enjoy each day.”
