Local law proposed to add solar systems to zoning code

AMENIA — Given the elevated interest in installing solar energy systems in Amenia, the Town Board approved a resolution to introduce a local law to amend a chapter in the town’s zoning code and add a new section about solar energy systems at its meeting on Thursday, May 16.

Town Supervisor Victoria Perotti reported there are currently no provisions in the town’s zoning code to control the placement of solar energy systems in Amenia. Defining solar energy as “a renewable energy sources that can prevent fossil fuel emissions and reduce the demand for the production and transmission of electricity from large scale power plants,” she said installing solar energy systems could help reduce property owners’ energy bills.

The proposed law would amend a chapter of the town’s zoning code to include a new section about solar energy systems. Solar energy systems will be regulated. As a result, solar energy systems would be permitted as an accessory use in zoning districts, including residential uses, business uses and community uses. In doing so, the board also acknowledged that measures should be taken to minimize adverse impacts on neighboring properties, protect the environment (including agricultural soils, vegetation and tree cover) and protect the general public health, safety and welfare.

A public hearing on the proposed local law will be held on Thursday, June 20, at 7 p.m. at Amenia Town Hall, located at 4988 Route 22. A copy of the proposed local law is available for review at the town clerk’s office during regular office hours at Amenia Town Hall.
