Manager charged with theft from Xtramart

NORTH CANAAN — A woman has been accused of embezzling more than $23,000 from the Xtramart convenience store in North Canaan.Anastasia Mullen, 24, of Lower Road in East Canaan turned herself in April 1. She was charged with first-degree larceny. Resident State Trooper David Collins has been investigating since the store reported the thefts, which appear to have occurred over the last month or two. Mullin worked at the store on the corner of East Main Street/Route 44 and North Elm Street for about four years, Collins said, and has been a manager for about two years. Among her duties as a manager was making bank deposits. Those deposits are almost entirely cash.Collins said Mullen was caught taking cash from one deposit, and replenishing it with cash from the next deposit. “We have no idea about her motive,” Collins said. “She refused to talk to us. I can say that Xtramart has changed its policy on bank deposits.”There are no other suspects. Mullen posted a $5,000 bond and was released from custody. She is scheduled to appear in Bantam Superior Court April 15.
