Maplebrook Class of ’19 graduates 19

AMENIA — There were 19 graduates among the Maplebrook School Class of 2019. Maplebrook is an international coeducational boarding/day school for young people with learning differences who are 11 to 21 years of age.

President of the Student Government, Ransom Larson, from Lakeville, Conn., welcomed the family and friends in attendance followed by Donna Konkolics, head of school/CEO, who was officiating her last graduation ceremony as she prepares for retirement at the end of the month.

Two sets of students graduated at the commencement ceremony — 10 from the Academy Program and nine from the Institute of Collegiate and Career Studies (ICCS), which provides collegiate study, vocational training and independent living instruction. The graduates hail from near and far representing seven different states and five foreign countries. Fifty percent of the Academy class will be returning next year to its own postsecondary program, the Institute for Collegiate and Career Studies, and 30% will pursue different college opportunities and/or vocational certification programs while the other 20% return home to work.

In honor of the retirement of Konkolics, the Disney themed prom decorations remained as the back-drop for the ceremony as she is a #1 fan. After 30 years at the school, it was only natural that she deliver some commencement remarks. Upon completion, Konkolics then handed the “keys to the kingdom” to her successor and the fifth Head of School, Jennifer Scully, who finished the commencement address challenging students to be like some of the more beloved Disney characters and quoted Walt Disney himself stating, “All of our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.”

Several scholarships and special awards were distributed by members of the Board of Trustees while students were asked to rise in place to receive congratulations for awards presented on Saturday and for the achievement of Society of Honor. Faculty and staff were also recognized. The Community Appreciation Award presented by John Tomasetti, the coordinator of community work internships, was presented to Jack and Linda Gregory of Jack’s Auto Service for all of their work on behalf of the students.

With a collective turn of the tassel, the Class of 2019 recessed led by a bagpiper.  The graduates were then greeted by more than 250 classmates, friends, faculty and family before enjoying a coffee and cake reception.
