Maplebrook School opens Whalen Hall

AMENIA — Amidst friends, parents, faculty, staff, students and honored guests, Maplebrook School recently dedicated its new 160-person dining room as Whalen Hall. This recognition was in honor of George and Ann Whalen and family. George T. Whalen Jr. has served on the Maplebrook Board of Trustees and Maplebrook Foundation Board of Directors for nearly 15 years. He and his wife, Ann, a former resident of Amenia, have supported the school for many years. Whalen and President of Maplebrook School Roger Fazzone co-chaired the “Forging the Future” Capital Campaign responsible for raising $1.5 million for the dining hall project.At the ceremony were Deputy County Executive William O’Neill, on behalf of Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro; town of Amenia Supervisor Bill Flood; Vice Chair of the Maplebrook Board of Trustees Robert S. Audia; faculty member Susan Lopane; Father Kent Wilson of Immaculate Conception Church; Christian Meyer, Meyer Contracting; Ed Bowers, Culinary Management Corporation; Zachary Berger, student representative; Donna Konkolics, Head of School/CEO; and Fazzone. Guests enjoyed a luncheon after the ribbon cutting in the new dining room. Maplebrook teaches students with learning differences and Attention Deficit Disorder. Now is the perfect time to plan ahead for symphonic music this summer at Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusetts. Here are a few highlights from the classical programming.

Saturday, July 5: Shed Opening Night at 8 p.m. Andris Nelsons conducts the Boston Symphony Orchestra as Daniil Trifonov plays piano in an All-Rachmaninoff program. The Piano Concerto No. 3 was completed in 1909 and was written specifically to be debuted in the composer’s American tour, at another time of unrest and upheaval in Russia. Trifonev is well-equipped to take on what is considered among the most technically difficult piano pieces. This program also includes Symphonic Dances, a work encapsulating many ideas and much nostalgia.
