Margaret Ann ‘Peggy’ Garnto

MILLERTON — Margaret Ann “Peggy” Garnto, 79, a 43-year resident of Millerton, died peacefully on Oct. 11, 2019, at Noble Horizons in Salisbury, following a nearly 20-year battle with cancer. Peggy worked for the Wassaic Developmental Center as a therapy aide prior to her retirement.

Born Aug. 16, 1940, in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Margaret H. (Whitson) and Henry Stroh. Her husband, Thomas C. Garnto, predeceased her. 

Peggy loved traveling to Europe, Alaska and Australia. She was an avid Elvis fan and a diehard New England Patriots fan. 

Peggy volunteered as a driver for the North East Community Center and attended the Cancer Survivors Support Group in Sharon, in addition to being a longtime parishioner of St. Patrick’s Church in Millerton. 

She had a love for butterflies and will be dearly missed by her loving family and many friends.

Peggy is survived by her two children, Thomas H. Garnto of York, Pa., and Catherine Bomberger of Pittsburgh, Pa.; her daughter-in-law, Sandra Garnto; a cousin, Tim Hastings; six grandchildren, Robert Wallace, John Wallace, Jamie Garnto, Thomas Garnto Jr., Shawnaa Garnto-Patterson and her husband, Matthew, and Grayson Garnto; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Henry; and two sisters, Arlene and Sally.

Calling hours will take place on Thursday, Oct. 17, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Scott D. Conklin Funeral Home in Millerton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 4 Lavelle Road, in Amenia. The Rev. Robert K. Wilson will officiate. Interment will be private.
