Marie B. Trager

CORNWALL — Marie B. Trager, 87, of Popple Swamp Road died unexpectedly at her home Aug. 2, 2010. She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Frank G. Trager.

Marie Jean Basco was born in New York City on June 14, 1923, the daughter of Rena and Phil Basco of West Islip, N.Y.

She attended Hunter College but interrupted her education to participate in the World War II war effort. She later proudly attained her college degree from the University of Connecticut at age 71.

Marie worked for more than 25 years in the alumni office of The Hotchkiss School and also worked at Mohawk ski area. She volunteered with Hospice Volunteers of Northwest Connecticut and at the Bargain Barn in Sharon.

She also contributed to productions at the Goshen Playhouse and lent her voice to choral performances at The Hotchkiss School.

Marie was an avid reader, cook and gardener and loved to travel. She was at her happiest cooking for the masses at family gatherings.

She is survived by her children, Susan Trager of Laguna Beach, Calif., Nettie Trager-Fuellenkemper and her husband. Horst Fuellenkemper, of East Sussex, England, Frank R. Trager and his wife, Caryn, of Norfolk, Laurie Trager and her husband, Robert Morrin, of Berlin, Conn., and Philip Trager and his wife, Theresa Vollet, of Norfolk; six grandchildren, Madeleine, Robert and Conor Morrin, Hannah and Jessie Fuellenkemper and Nevada Trager; and her two beloved feline companions.  

She would have wanted to express her gratitude for the excellent medical care given to her by Dr. Stephen Bryant of Torrington and Dr. Upendra Hegde of University of Connecticut  Health.  

A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday, Aug. 6, at St. Bridget’s Church in Cornwall Bridge at 11am. Burial will follow at St Bridget’s cemetery.  Arrangements are under the care of the Kenny Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Geer Dial-A-Ride, The Chore Service and Northwestern Connecticut Transit District.

NORTH CANAAN — Steve Blass Little League AAA baseball opened the 2024 season on Saturday, April 27, with an afternoon match between the Giants and Red Sox.

The Giants stood tall and came out on top with a 15-7 win over their Region One counterparts, the Red Sox. Steve Blass AAA teams are composed of players aged 9 to 11 from Cornwall, Kent, Falls Village, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury and Sharon.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
