Miriam Landis Holst-Grubbe

SHARON — Miriam Landis Holst-Grubbe, 95, died peacefully in her home in Sharon on Jan. 15, 2015. Mrs. Holst-Grubbe was born in Baltimore, Md., on Dec. 14, 1919, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James R. Manning. She attended The Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore and went on to graduate from The Madeira School and Bennington College as a member of the class of 1943. She moved to New York City, where she briefly taught at the Brearley School before starting her career in publishing. She worked at McMillan Publishers for a decade before taking a one-year sabbatical in Europe that took her through the mountains of Saint Anton to the ruins of Pompeii. After returning to the United States, she moved to Great Barrington, Mass., and began a distinguished career with High Fidelity magazine, where she served as the managing editor. She retired upon her marriage to William W. Landis Jr. in 1960, whereupon they moved to Sharon to raise a family. Widowed in 1988, she married Reidar Holst-Grubbe in 1998. They had a wonderful 10-year marriage, culminating with his passing in 2008.Over her 50 years in Sharon she was very active in her community, serving on the vestry of Christ Church, the board of the Sharon Day Care Center and as a lifelong member in the Sharon Woman’s Club. She was also a member of the Colonial Dames of America. Her social life was centered on her love of literature, needlework, knitting and art. She was active in several book clubs, knitting and needle circles and late in life took up painting.She was predeceased by her siblings, Joan, Elizabeth and Leslie Manning. Mrs. Holst-Grubbe is survived by her children, Miriam L. Babcock, wife of Frederick Babcock of Amenia, and William W. Landis III, husband of Meredith Landis, of New Canaan, Conn.; six grandchildren, Holden, Cooper and Quinn Babcock and William, Chase and Timothy Landis; seven Holst-Grubbe stepchildren; and 15 step-grandchildren.A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 11 a.m. at Christ Church Episcopal, Sharon. Please wear bright colors. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sharon Day Care Center, 80 Hilltop Road, Sharon, CT 06069 or the Sharon Woman’s Club Art Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 283, Sharon, CT 06069. Arrangements are under the care of the Kenny Funeral Home in Sharon.

BRISTOL — The Gilbert/Northwestern/Housatonic co-op football team ended the season with a 34-0 shutout victory over St. Paul Catholic High School Wednesday, Nov. 26.

It was GNH’s fourth consecutive Turkey Bowl win against St. Paul and the final game for 19 GNH seniors.

The Kearcher-Monsell Gallery at Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village is once again host to a wonderful student-curated exhibition. “Once Upon a Time in America,” ten portraits by New Haven artist Katro Storm, opened on Nov. 20 and will run through the end of the year.

“This is our first show of the year,” said senior student Alex Wilbur, the current head intern who oversees the student-run gallery. “I inherited the position last year from Elinor Wolgemuth. It’s been really amazing to take charge and see this through.”

Mini horses, big impact: animal learning center opens in Sheffield

Le Petit Ranch offers animal-assisted therapy and learning programs for children and seniors in Sheffield.

Le Petit Ranch, a nonprofit offering animal-assisted therapy and learning programs, opened in April at 147 Bears Den Road in Sheffield. Founded by Marjorie Borreda, the center provides programs for children, families and seniors using miniature horses, rescued greyhounds, guinea pigs and chickens.

Borreda, who moved to Sheffield with her husband, Mitch Moulton, and their two children to be closer to his family, has transformed her longtime love of animals into her career. She completed certifications in animal-assisted therapy and coaching in 2023, along with coursework in psychiatry, psychology, literacy and veterinary skills.
