Monica Tucker


SHARON — Monica (Klocko) Tucker, 95, of Still Meadow Road died Feb. 20 at Sharon Hospital. She was the widow of Meridith Ladve Tucker, who died in 1936.

Mrs. Tucker was born on May 27, 1911, in Dunkirk, N.Y., the daughter of the late Julia (Renswick) and Frank Klocko. She lived there for most of her life until moving to Sharon in 1991. Mrs. Tucker studied at the University of Michigan and received her teaching certificate from what was then known as the Normal School in Fredonia, N.Y., and is now the State University of New York at Fredonia.

Mrs. Tucker was an official at the federal Office of Prize Administration during World War II, and after the war she worked as a medical practice manager until she retired. She was an officer of the Business and Professional Women of America, an early national women’s organization. In Sharon, she was a devoted member of the Sharon Woman’s Club and a dedicated volunteer at the Bargain Barn. Not previously known for her interest in nature, Mrs. Tucker developed a keen enjoyment of the wildlife and scenic beauty in and around Sharon.

Mrs. Tucker is survived by a brother, General Richard P. Klocko, USAF (retired) of Hilton Head, S.C.; a son, Alan D. Tucker of New York City and Sharon; and a granddaughter, Kumi Julia Tucker of Albany, N.Y., and New York City.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Bernard’s Church, Sharon, on Friday, Feb. 23, at 11 a.m.

The Kenny Funeral Home in Sharon has charge of arrangements. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Bernard’s Church, New Street, Sharon, CT 06069.

NORTH CANAAN — Steve Blass Little League AAA baseball opened the 2024 season on Saturday, April 27, with an afternoon match between the Giants and Red Sox.

The Giants stood tall and came out on top with a 15-7 win over their Region One counterparts, the Red Sox. Steve Blass AAA teams are composed of players aged 9 to 11 from Cornwall, Kent, Falls Village, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury and Sharon.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
