More sports for CCS students

CORNWALL — In response to a resident’s request for a tuition waiver, the Cornwall Board of Education voted to uphold its policy governing such waivers at their meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 25.

The current policy requires payment of a pro-rated amount, reflecting the percentage of the school year during which the student is attending Cornwall Consolidated School while residing outside of the school district.

After-school intramural sports for grades three through six were approved by the board, in agreement with Principal Mike Croft’s proposal that such a program would provide more activities for students and fill a gap.

Finding necessary funds within the budget for this year, the board approved hiring two intramural coaches at a cost of $2,104 each.

Croft envisions that the program will meet one or two times each week, moving through various sports, and emphasizing active playing time. He reported that he has talked with the town’s director of Parks and Recreation to ensure that the new programs will complement each other.

Recognizing the success of the start-of-school Start with Hello program initiated by teacher Laura Munson, the board presented her with an achievement certificate.

“You can really tell these programs are making a huge contribution,” board Chairman Catherine Tatge said in presenting the award.
