Mountaineer Week in Review

FALLS VILLAGE — The spring season opened on April 1 with Mother Nature once again playing an important role.   

Micah Matsudaira won his first tennis match of the season at first singles against Shepaug in a super tie-breaker.  Ian Danforth Gold won at second singles, 6-2, 6-1. The team lost the overall match, 4-2.  

The girls team faced Shepaug at home. The first doubles team of Anna Coon and Maddie Dekker won, 6-3, 6-3; the second doubles team of Elaine Dekker and Neve O’Connell won, 6-4, 6-2, and the third doubles team of Marijke Stiffler and Sarah Upson won, 6-3, 7-5. The team lost the overall match, 4-3.  

The girls lacrosse team traveled to New Haven to play Amistad Academy.  The team won 9-7 with Genevieve Bushey, Abigail Dodge and Maggie Raftery scoring. Jordan Haggard had four saves in goal. 

JV and varsity baseball were rained out.  

Varsity baseball opened their season against Nonnewaug at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury on April 2. Caleb Shpur had a two-run single in the 6-2 loss. The JV baseball team lost to Nonnewaug, 10-0.  

Russell Sears and Brayton Wood both saw time on the mound, with Jacob Simonds starting behind the plate. 

Boys tennis had a 4-1 loss to Wamogo. Harrison Tillou won at third singles, 6-1, 7-5. Girls tennis recorded their first win of the season at Wamogo, 4-3.  Sayde Paulson won 6-2, 6-2 at first singles; Anna Coon and Maddie Dekker won at first doubles, 6-2, 6-3. Elaine Dekker and Neve O’Connell won at second doubles, 6-0, 6-1. Marijke Stiffler and Sarah Upson won at third doubles, 6-0, 6-0.

The softball team played a good defensive game in their 9-1 loss against Nonnewaug. Aliza Luminati had an RBI. Emma Crane pitched a solid game in her first full game on the mound.  

Track competed in their first meet of the season against Nonnewaug and Wamogo.  Both teams won against Wamogo and lost to Nonnewaug.  Sierra O’Niel took first place in the 300 hurdles and 200 meters.  

Jill Diamond took second place in the long jump. Xavier Johnson took first place in the 100 and 200 meters. Mikael Gudmarsson took first place in the high and triple jump and 300 hurdles. John Bartram took first place in the javelin. The 1600 meter relay team of Liam Money, Henry Lopez-Gonzalez, Mikael Gudmarsson and Xavier Johnson took first place.

Matt Murray pitched a no hitter with five strikeouts in a 10-0 (five innings) baseball game at home against Wamogo.  Russell Sears had a two run single and Sean Caiati had two singles in the April 4 game.

Girls lacrosse improved their record to 2-0 with an 11-10 win against Holy Cross on April 5. Genevieve Bushey had nine goals and Abigail Dodge had two. Annabelle Kovacs had nine saves in goal.

Fallen tree downs power lines, blocks Route 112

Eversource crews work to repair damaged power lines after a tree fell near onto Route 112 just north of the Interlaken Inn on Monday, June 22.

LAKEVILLE — A tree fell on Route 112 Monday, June 22, downing power lines and blocking traffic north of Route 41 near the Hotchkiss Four Corners.

Eversource crews on scene at 4:45 p.m. said power lines were being repaired and utility service had been restored to customers in the area.

DOVER PLAINS — Francis “Butch” Lynehan, 75, a twenty-year resident of Dover Plains, New York, formerly of Sharon, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, May 7, 2026 at Vassar Bros. Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Born Aug. 29, 1950, in Sharon, he was the son of the late William W. and Nellie (Kluun) Lynehan.

When designer Abigail Horace joined the Blackshires Leadership Accelerator, she was looking for support for her business, Casa Marcelo, which was founded in Salisbury in 2019. Through the Accelerator, she created the Black Berkshires Social Club, which creates culturally grounded social spaces for Black and BIPOC residents in the region. Throughout her experience, Horace found a community of peers invested in one another’s success.

“Finding Blackshires has been transformative,” Horace said. “Being a BIPOC founder in this region can feel isolating, and this community has changed that. They see my work, champion my business and have opened doors I couldn’t have opened alone.”

Kent Barns was alive with art on Saturday, June 13, as three new shows opened at Peggy Mercury and Kenise Barnes Fine Art, featuring a variety of fascinating paintings and drawings from four local artists.

Peggy Mercury, which in just two years has earned a reputation for curating remarkable collections of fine beauty products and accessories, continues to find exciting art to complement its offerings. The new show, “Portraits,” features four pairs of paintings by Millerton-based artist Alexis England. The “portraits” she paints, however, feature some pretty unexpected sitters.
