NASCAR (and an Earnhardt) come to Lime Rock

LIME ROCK — Coming into the last turn of the last lap of the Mohegan Sun 200 in first place, Mohegan Sun Chevrolet driver Matt Kobyluck of Uncasville, Conn., may have thought he was in the clear, even with Mike Olsen, a Chevrolet driver from North Haverhill, N.H., close behind him.

But then Kobyluck and Olsen hit an oil patch and spun off the course. Kobyluck was able to manhandle his car back on course and capture the win, finishing .258 seconds ahead of Sean Caisse of Pelham, N.H., a driver for Casella Waste Systems Chevrolet. Olsen was able to recover, but slipped back to ninth place.

The course on Saturday was full of hazards, causing officials to issue five full-course cautions and several “local cautions.

Jeff Anton of Russell, Mass., placed third, a career high, driving for Baran Institute/Engineered Floors Chevrolet.

Joey Logano of Middletown, Conn., point leader of the NASCAR Busch East Series, placed 23rd after spinning and striking a safety tire carrier in lap 43. His 188-point lead over Kobyluck shrunk to 92 points.

Also racing was a member of the famous Earnhardt racing family, Jeffery Earnhardt (grandson of Dale Earnhardt and nephew of Dale Earnhardt Jr.). Earnhardt placed fifth.

The next race in the series is Saturday, Aug. 25, at Mansfield (Ohio) Motorsports Park.
