NASCAR races into Lime Rock Park

LIME ROCK — It was a beautiful day for racing at Lime Rock Park on Saturday, Aug. 15, when the Mohegan Sun 200 NASCAR race was held at the track.

Thousands of race fans attended and saw some world-class drivers and cars go against each other for 86 fast-paced, action-packed laps.

“What’s there not to love about NASCAR? race official Dick Girard said before the race. “It’s all about the competition and the camaraderie of the racers and the teams. If someone breaks down or has a problem on the course, there’s always someone else from another team to help out.

Ryan Truex came in first after leading the last 17 laps. Eddie MacDonald finished only 1.4 seconds behind Truex. Skip Barber Racing School instructor Jason Holehouse came in third.

Uncasville native Matt Kobyluck, the defending NASCAR Camping World East Series champion, had to drop out of the action. Kobyluck’s car was plagued with engine trouble and sputtered around the track right after the green flag. His car eventually stalled on lap 9.

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.

Orchestrating was no easy feat, especially considering much of the work was left up to the students.
