New businesses go before Planning Board

For a number of years, residents and business owners of Millbrook and the town of Washington have been looking forward to an expansion of business along Franklin Avenue to “wake up” the entire area.Fortunately, the “big sleep” appears to be over and some closed shops appear to be opening. One of the first businesses is one block off Franklin Avenue — at 5 Merritt Ave. — a barn that once was part of the Taconic Press property across the street from the Millbrook Post Office. It was vacant for years but has been purchased and renovations are beginning by R.A. Nilsen Construction Corp. The barn will become two separate offices. It will have a new copper roof and the blacktop parking space in front will be replaced by grass. The upper part of Franklin Avenue will welcome Rose Randolph Cookies to 3306 Franklin Ave., a building that has stood vacant just above the Taylor Oil building across the street from the Millbrook Free Library. The business is owned by Barbara Demosthenes, who plans to sell retail and wholesale baked goods, ice cream, beverages and baking products. She plans to have a few small tables and chairs inside the shop. Her product offerings will include pre-packaged ice cream, coffee, tea and cold beverages along with her baked goods. She hopes to open on Sunday, Sept. 1.A proposal to open a Leaf and Bean Coffee House at 3286B Franklin Ave. was made to the Planning Board on June 18, but has not moved since then. The building was formerly an architect’s office.Under new business, attorney Joshua Mackay, a town resident with offices in Poughkeepsie and Albany, applied to open an office at 3208 Franklin Ave. The building is the former chiropractic medical office of the late Dr. John Trama. Mackay proposed to install his law firm in the office and rent the apartment on the property. The rental presents a problem, since it is supposed to be occupied by the owner. The Planning Board advised Mackay to attend the Thursday, Sept. 12, Town Board meeting and seek a variance.
