WINSTED — While Charter Channel 13 in Winsted has become known as a hot spot for insight and information on local politics, as well as a bit of comedic entertainment from time to time, talks of budgets and town politics may not be the diversion from life viewers are seeking when turning on the tube at night. If that’s so, they’ll find a viable alternative in a new show, "What’s Cooking Winsted," featuring Theresa Cannavo.

It is no secret that Cannavo has a passion for cooking, with a flair for teaching and entertaining to boot, so when Jay "The Camera Man" Budahazy started talking about Cannavo hosting her own cooking show on Channel 13, she jumped at the opportunity.

While this will not be Cannavo’s television debut — she appeared on the Food Network after winning the channel’s cookie competition in 2006 — this will be Cannavo’s first opportunity at a television series of her own.

During the course of the 13-week long series, Cannavo will provide a variety of cooking demonstrations and ideas for all ages, such as quick and healthy snacks for teens on the go, cookie recipes for children and a variety of popular dishes enjoyed by Cannavo’s biggest fans: her family. Her first show will feature "meats you can schnitzel."

In addition to cooking live, Cannavo will feature local musicians and groups, as well as guest taste-testers. A call-in segment is planned and e-mailed questions will also be answered during the hour.

The first show will air Friday, Dec. 12, from 6 to 7 p.m., and Cannavo is already looking for musical guests, taste-testers and questions. E-mail Cannavo at whatscookingwinsted@gmail.com.

Cannavo is also looking for sponsors and other help with the show. Currently the costs of producing the show are coming out of her own pocket.

"My daughters have promised to help me," said Cannavo. "Joe will be the clean-up crew, he just doesn’t know it yet."

Budahazy will film live and uncut from Cannavo’s kitchen and other key locations for special editions.

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
