A new home for Shear Illusions salon

SHARON — The Shear Illusions hair salon has moved from its former location at the shopping plaza, next to the restaurant, to a neat new location on West Main Street.

Award-winning designer/builder Rafe Churchill bought and renovated the former oncology office there and Shear Illusions is one of the first new tenants.

Salon owner Becky Welsh said she opened on Jan. 5, bringing her former customers with her to the new location.

She’s been styling hair for 27 years, she said, and was at the plaza location for 12 years. The salon itself had been there since 1963.

Last year, Welsh said, the ceiling at the salon had collapsed. The plaza owners had suggested she move to a new, larger space on the other side of the parking area but she chose to move to the new, more compact space in the center of town instead.

“I’m excited to have a brand new location and a nicely renovated new spot,” Welsh said.

There is also a convenient neighbor across the street: Smitty’s Barbershop owned by Corey Smith.

“Sometimes we share customers,” Welsh said. She styles men’s and women’s hair but, “I don’t do shaving, like Smitty’s does.”

Anyone who isn’t familiar with Shear Illusions and would like to learn more (and, of course, anyone else who wants to come) is invited to the open house at 19 West Main St. on Saturday, Feb. 4, from 3 to 5 p.m.

Call for appointments at 860-364-5111.

While playing outside in the early post-pandemic days, Berkshire Busk! founder Eugene Carr had an epiphany: why not expand the idea of performing on the street (aka busking)into a full-fledged festival in Great Barrington?

As an entrepreneur and cellist, Carr envisioned a well-organized jamboree featuring regional talent, including musicians, acrobats, storytellers, fire-eaters, and more. He formed a team, connected with local businesses and the town of Great Barrington, and launched Berkshire Busk! in 2021. Since then, Berkshire Busk! has grown into a summer staple for Great Barrington.

What if the dog onstage was played by a person? That’s the delightful twist in A.R. Gurney’s “Sylvia,” opening at the Sharon Playhouse on Aug. 29. In this clever and heartfelt comedy, the title character — a stray pup who disrupts the lives of a married couple — is portrayed not in costume but by an actor who brings insight, charm, and chaos to the role.

Stepping into Sylvia’s paws is Jen Cody, who is returning to the Sharon Playhouse in a starring role for her third year in a row, ready to bring this spirited dog to life. She’s joined by Jonathan Walker as Greg, the middle-aged man smitten with his new four-legged friend, and Jennifer Van Dyck as Kate, his wife, whose patience and identity are tested by Sylvia’s sudden presence in their home.
