SOAR into after-school classes

If you go to Salisbury Central School, you probably know what it feels like to be so excited all day that you can’t pay attention, and finally run up the hill to an after-school class. But have you ever wondered who makes these classes happen?

SOAR (Seek, Originate, Aim, Reach) offers after-school classes to Salisbury Central School students in kindergarten through eighth grade. SOAR is sponsored by the Salisbury Central School Educational Enrichment Fund, which is funded by the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation.

There are two semesters of SOAR classes: a fall semester and a spring semester. The SOAR committee tries to make sure that there is at least one class offered in each semester about that season. For example, the fall semester offered a class called Fall Leaves, all about signs of fall in nature. Now, the spring semester is offering a class called Signs of Spring, which explores the different signals that spring is coming.

There is a big variety of classes offered by SOAR. There are many "veteran" classes that have been offered for many years. These include Puppets, Ceramics and Super Sonic Sculpture. There are also many new classes, such as Drama and Journalism.

Barbara Sohl, assistant to the SOAR director, thinks that kids really enjoy SOAR classes.

"You can tell that kids love these classes," she said, "when you see the smiles on their faces."

So, if you live in Salisbury and you are interested in learning a new skill, SOAR is for you! For more information, you can call the SOAR director, Jennifer Law, at 860-824-0620.

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.
