Joint Sewer Committee invites public to its first meeting

NORTH EAST - The recently formed Joint Sewer Committee for North East and Millerton plans its inaugural meeting for next Thursday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m. at the American Legion Hall. The public is urged to attend.

"We're just trying to get some feedback from the community on whether they want it and think they need it and if they think the town should do it," Joint Sewer Committee Chairman Robert Trotta said. "This would be our first meeting, and what I've done is to reach out to various people who would know something about this to speak to us."

Those people include experts in rural development, an engineer and someone with experience building wastewater systems.

"They'll give us a broad overview of what we ought to be taking a look at as far as some pertinent information. That's our job, to develop that information and get back to the board so we know what steps to take," Trotta said.

Two questions remain: whether the community wants a sewer system or whether a system should be for the entire community or just the business district.

"The public knows as much about this as we do at this point," Trotta added. "This is going to be a learning experience for all of us."

Trotta said that if anyone has experience with system failures the committee would like to know about it. Likewise, if anyone has a real interest in having a central sewer the committee would like to know that also. Additionally, if people feel that a wastewater system would just be an additional tax and of no real benefit the committee would like to hear that too.

"I don't think anyone of us has a preconceived idea as to whether this is feasible," Trotta said. "We can build anything, and the cost can be born by the people in the district, if they want it."

North East town Supervisor Dave Sherman said he's hopeful that members of the public will make a point of attending next week's meeting.

"People interested in the subject matter should attend," he said.

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.

Orchestrating was no easy feat, especially considering much of the work was left up to the students.
