Spaghetti supper to benefit veteran

MILLERTON — A spaghetti dinner benefit for Ron Giblin will be held Friday, Sept. 12, at 5 p.m. at the American Legion Post 178 on Route 44 in Millerton.

Giblin, a Vietnam veteran and a single father, recently suffered a stroke, which left him partially paralyzed.

The local contractor will be out of work for at least six months while he recovers and will not have any income during that time.

At a previous breakfast fundraising event given for Giblin on Aug. 31, Carl Ellis, a member of the Sons of The American Legion who has also worked with Giblin for 10 years, said Giblin was still recovering.

"He’s a really nice guy and he’s doing good right now," Ellis said. "He’s going to physical therapy right now and we’re hoping he’ll recover."

In a previous interview, event organizer "NASCAR" Dave MacMillan said that Giblin is an all-round good guy.

"I can’t even imagine what it would be like without a job and without any income whatsoever," MacMillan said. "He is a very hard worker and will do anything for anyone. That is why we are all rallying around him."

At the breakfast benefit, Legion member Sean Klay said he appreciated the community’s support for Giblin.

"People should understand that veterans always help other veterans by sticking together," Klay said. "If something does happen, we know that we can always depend on each other to help out."

Tickets for the spaghetti dinner are $10. For more information or to make a donation to Ron Giblin, call the American Legion Post 178 at 518-789-4755 or contact organizer Billy Simmons at 518-488-0690.

School spirit on the rise at Housy

Students dressed in neon lined the soccer field for senior night under the lights on Thursday, Oct. 16. The game against Lakeview was the last in a series of competitions Thursday night in celebration of Homecoming 2025.

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.

Orchestrating was no easy feat, especially considering much of the work was left up to the students.
