Roller coaster week for Webutuck girls soccer

WEBUTUCK — It’s been a rocky season for Webutuck’s girls varsity soccer, and with each game bringing Coach Mark Moren and his team closer to the end, their ups and downs only grow more apparent.

Case in point: The team started out strong last Wednesday, Sept. 15, in a home game against Rhinebeck. The Warriors shut out the Hawks 2-0.

"This was a big divisional game for us," Moren said. "The girls played really well tonight, passed the ball well and played smart out on the field."

Goals were scored by senior Keely McCaffrey, with an assist by freshman Maddie Trotter, and senior Lauren Trotter, assisted by McCaffrey.

"That gave us the 2-0 lead into halftime," Moren said. "In the second half our defense all held in strong. Jamie Laliberte, Danielle Fontaine, Brielle Williams, Alicia Flinn and Madison Marshall all played really well to help goalie Amanda Pelkey get the shutout."

The next divisional game for the girls was last Friday, Oct. 17, and unfortunately fell on the other side of the spectrum. The girls lost 2-1 in double overtime to Millbrook at home.

"It was a good played game by both teams," Moren said. "It was very close for most of the game."

Freshman Victoria Cullinan scored the lone Webutuck goal, assisted by Katie Ruppel. It was Cullinan’s first career varsity goal and tied up the game at 1-1 going into halftime.

"The second half went back and forth and the first overtime was pretty even," Moren reported. "Then in the second OT Millbrook stepped it up a little bit. I thought we were going to squeak by with the tie, but I guess we just got a bad break."

Pelkey, a senior, played in goal and saved a penalty kick during regular play, keeping the Warriors’ hopes alive until overtime.

The loss brings the Warriors to a 5-9-1 overall record, with a 4-7-1 in the league and 2-2 in the division.

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.
