Toys through the ages at historical society

FALLS VILLAGE —An antique Pin the Tail on the Donkey game and set of blocks are among the  antique toys on display at the Falls Village-Canaan Historical Society until Christmas.

This the first time the collection of a century’s worth of playthings is on display. The oldest item dates from about 1860; the newest is a Howdy Doody doll that dates from the late 1950s-early 1960s and was donated by Falls Village resident Dave Matheson. Many of the other items were donated from the Beckley family in East Canaan.

The Howdy Doody doll is the largest item in the show; the smallest is a pair of China dolls, each about an inch or less.

A curious visitor could also get a demonstration of the inner workings of the Gravity Washing Machine, ca. 1900.

The historical society is open to the public on Thursday afternoons but visitors can also call 860-824-8226 to set up an appointment.  There will be an open house around Christmas as well.
