Housatonic in Sports Illustrated

FALLS VILLAGE —The Housatonic/Wamogo football squad is featured in the Dec. 1 issue of Sports Illustrated, part of an article about the resurgence of the single-wing offense.  Written by longtime SI contributor Tim Layden, the six-page article discusses the history and the current applications of the single wing in high school, college and the pros.

Under a paragraph titled “Rebirth, Layden writes about the offensive system as it was used in the Housy-Windsor Locks game, with Sam Schwartz, Tanner Brissett and Will Kennedy all mentioned as part of the article, along with Coach Deron Bayer. A photo from the game, by SI’s David Bergman, is placed next to the five-paragraph section devoted to the Mountaineers.

“We are just thrilled that our program got recognized, an elated Coach Bayer said of the article. “There’s at least 40 other programs they could have written about. It was an honor that they chose us.

Coach Bayer, who gets a nice write-up in the piece, credits John Ward of South Carolina as his mentor and the inspiration for installing the single-wing offense.

Of course, it could be that the famous “SI curse has struck again. It has long been held among some sports fan that getting featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated “curses the honoree, although actual studies have proved otherwise.

However, the issue, which mentions the article on the cover, came out on Wednesday, Nov. 26. And we all know what happened to Housy in the Berkshire Bowl!

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.

Orchestrating was no easy feat, especially considering much of the work was left up to the students.
