Parishioners honor Father Bruce

Members of Winsted’s Catholic community gathered Sunday, June 7, at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Marshall Street to celebrate the tenure of Father Bruce Czapla, who leaves Winsted’s St. Joseph Church this month for a position at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Derry, N.H.

Czapla leaves after eight years of service in Winsted, and judging by the large crowd of admirers who came out to see him Sunday, he will be greatly missed. A former registered nurse and acknowledged “Star Trekâ€ fan, he has taken his vow of poverty as a Franciscan friar. He conducted services for about 1,500 families in the community, or about 5,000 members.

Children and families enjoyed live entertainment and pony rides with an array of food Sunday, with Czapla cutting a cake in his honor. Indoor and outdoor games were held for the eldest and youngest members of the congregation, while a steady output of hamburgers, hot dogs and fried dough emerged from the grilling area.

St. Joseph Church members lined up to give their best wishes to Father Bruce and said they will remember him fondly as church life goes on.

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.

Orchestrating was no easy feat, especially considering much of the work was left up to the students.
