Virginia G. Devantery

Lakeville —Virginia G. Devantery, 92, of Newfields, N.H., and formerly Lakeville, died peacefully on Oct. 25, 2009, at Hyder Family Hospice House in Dover, N.H.

She was born Dec. 21, 1916, in Rochester, N.Y., to the late Katherine Nally and Edward J. Guindon.

Ginny was raised in Amenia, and attended the Amenia Union Elementary School, a one-room schoolhouse. She graduated from Amenia High School in 1934.

She  became an RN in 1938,  graduating from the Henry W. Bishop Memorial School of Nursing in Pittsfield, Mass.  While working at Sharon Hospital, she met her husband, Herbert J. Devantery. They were married in Palm Beach on a three-day pass in April 1943. They moved about during the war and finally settled in Lakeville in 1946, where they raised their family and lived for 64 years until his death in 2007.

As a young woman, she was involved in theater. She is remembered as being the life of every party.  She was full of stories of her many experiences and kept everyone laughing. She loved sewing and gardening. She was always well dressed and usually seen around Lakeville with hat and gloves. But her greatest passion was nursing. She was a dedicated nurse, much in demand because of her delightful personality and skill.  She worked at the Harkness Pavilion of Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, Sharon Hospital and the Sharon Clinic, the Salisbury Visiting Nurse Association, Noble Horizons, and for many years was a private duty nurse.  She loved caring for others, and worked well into her 80s.

The last years of her life in Lakeville were spent caring for her husband.  She moved to Newfields in April to  be closer to her family in her final days.

Ginny is survived by her two sons, Robert J. Devantery and his wife, Nina, of Newfields, and James J. Devantery and his wife, Helen, of Denver, Colo. Her extended family includes three grandchildren, Trina and Bob Daigle of Newmarket, Heidi and Eric Taylor of Eliot, Maine, and Hans Schule of Roseville, Calif.; and six great-grandchildren, Lukas, Katelyn, Rylie, Brielle, Ben and Emmarose.

A service of celebration will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the Noble Horizons Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salisbury Visiting Nurse Association, 30 Salmon Kill Road, Salisbury, CT 06068. Local arrangements are under the care of the Kenny Funeral Home in Sharon.

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.

Orchestrating was no easy feat, especially considering much of the work was left up to the students.

As the chilly breeze settles in, Halloween approaches and the community yearns for spooky festivities — HVRHS has answered that calling. An event held annually for the past eight years, the HVRHS haunted house has returned.

The event is organized by the current senior and junior year classes — 2026 and 2027 respectively — and held to raise money that goes toward the junior and senior class’s activities such as senior week, prom, the senior class trip, and more.
