‘Resilient kindness and diversity’ at NCES

NORTH CANAAN — Friends and family members filled the auditorium of North Canaan Elementary School on June 14 to bid the departing eighth grade class adieu.

The ceremony included a song and poem performed by the graduates and individual awards from the superintendent, board of education, Harriet Leila Wood Fund, and teachers from each subject.

Principal Alicia Roy spoke to the strength of character that this class possesses and wished them good luck as they enter high school.

“You are all braver than you might believe. You’re also strong. You know the importance of friendships, caring, kindness, and compassion,” said Roy. “Class of 2023, you are ready for the next four years of your life.”

“Today we bid farewell to North Canaan Elementary School, a place where we’ve laughed, learned, and grown together,” said graduate Gustavo Portillo. “As we leave, we carry the values of resilient kindness and diversity. Graduation is a beginning, not an end.”

The eighth graders joined together to sing “How Far I’ll Go” by Lin Manuel Miranda before receiving their certificates.

Confetti covered the stage as the promoted students departed the auditorium to rejoice with loved ones over refreshments in the cafeteria.
