As the summer season begins, we are revisiting and summarizing some of the ongoing issues that have captured our attention during the past year.
NORTH EAST — Plans to build a 36,000-square-foot supermarket in the town of North East’s Boulevard District, just west of the Connecticut state line, remain in limbo, as an Article 78 lawsuit to block the application remains in the Supreme Court of the State of New York, Dutchess County, in Poughkeepsie. It is currently in the appeal process.
The proposed supermarket would be behind the building that is now home to North East Fitness and Wellness and Kids Time.
Sharon Kroeger (who owns a shop in Wassaic) appealed the dismissal of her original Article 78 lawsuit that sought to prevent Southern Realty Development (SRD) from constructing the store on Route 44 East.
Kroeger complained the store as planned was too large, calling it a “mega store,” and said it would put local merchants out of business.
According to SRD principal John Joseph, the tenant (who has not been named but is believed to be Hannaford) offered to build a smaller store, at 27,000 square feet.
“She refused,” Joseph said.
