Northwestern boys tennis team reaches state quarterfinals

WEST HARTFORD — Two boys tennis doubles teams from Northwestern Regional High School made it to the quarterfinals of the Class S state tennis championships, held last week at Conard High School in West Hartford.The doubles team of Tyler Lemieux and Zach Phillips performed well for Northwestern, beating doubles teams from Granby and Bolton before dropping two consecutive sets (7-6, 6-2) to Bradley Berry and Daniel Kurpaska of Old Lyme.Dylan Achee and Wesley Switzgable of Northwestern also made it to the third round, beating teams from Classical Magnet School in Hartford and Westbrook before falling to Nick Richter and Jack Lawless of Weston. A third team, Robert Carter and Alex Hill of Northwestern, made it to the first round of the championships, but lost a hard-fought match to Dylan Allen and Alex Brault of Old Lyme.Getting into the tournament was a cause for celebration for Northwestern’s young tennis squad, which won five of its last six matches in the regular season to end with an 8-8 record and make the cut. The Northwestern girls tennis team fell two matches short, finishing the regular season with a record of 6-10.

School spirit on the rise at Housy

As homecoming week reaches its end and fall sports finish out the season, an air of school spirit and student participation seems to be on the rise across Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

But what can be attributed to this sudden peak of student interest? That’s largely due to SGA. Also known as the Student Government Association, SGA has dedicated itself to creating events to bring the entire student body together. This year, they decided to change some traditions.

The weekend of Homecoming at HVRHS was packed with events including rival games under the lights, senior night, and a new take on Homecoming that moves it outside — and it wouldn’t have been possible without the students of Housatonic.
