O’Meara speaks against suit

WINSTED — When the Board of Education voted on April 19 to pursue legal action against the town for cutting $2,820,561 from the school budget, board member Paul O’Meara walked out of the meeting before the vote even began. In speaking with The Winsted Journal, O’Meara said that he has several issues with the board and does not agree with board members who voted to take legal action against the town.At the beginning of the April 19 meeting, the Board of Education went into executive session to discuss taking legal action.O’Meara said there was no just cause for the board to go into executive session.“When [the board] is talking about the town’s budget, I don’t think it’s right for them to go into executive session because the town of Winsted is not a contractor or a union,” O’Meara said. “There should be ramifications for the board for going into executive session to talk about the town’s budget.”As for the lawsuit against the town, O’Meara said he will not support it.“The town is now suing themselves because of this action,” he said. “We are taking away money and paying an attorney to sue ourselves, which does not make any sense. I am 100 percent against the lawsuit, and I will do nothing to support it or make any recommendations on it.”As for the budget cut made by the selectmen, O’Meara said he supports it.“In my view, it’s a cut reflective of the building closure and the savings from it,” he said. “There are other places we can cut besides teachers and staff.”The vote at the meeting to pursue legal action was 5-1, with board member Carol Palomba voting no.Palomba did not return calls for comment for this story.
