Patrick Joseph Caldarelli

AMENIA — Patrick Joseph Caldarelli, 62, a longtime resident of Amenia, died Feb. 14, 2016, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. 

Pat was a flood control site supervisor for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Dutchess County Soil & Water Conservation District. 

Born on May 21, 1953, in Sharon, he was the son of Ellen (Downey) Caldarelli and the late Pasquale Caldarelli. 

Pat attended the Immaculate Conception School in Amenia and graduated from Webutuck Central School District, class of 1971. He later received an associate’s degree in applied sciences from Dutchess Community College, class of 1973. 

He was a member of the Amenia Fire Company and a parishioner of the Immaculate Conception Church in Amenia.

Pat took great interest in the environment. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and trapper. He also loved sports, especially soccer and baseball. He played on many championship baseball teams, from Little League up through college. 

During college, Pat was named an All-Conference Athlete.  

In addition to his mother, Pat is survived by a brother, Glenn Caldarelli of Amenia; his aunts, Catherine Gallagher of South Windsor, Conn., and Mary Ellen Downey of Amenia; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. 

In addition to his father, Pat was predeceased by a sister, June Caldarelli; and his sister-in-law, Jill Caldarelli. 

Funeral services were held Feb. 22, at the Hufcut Funeral Home in Dover Plains, the Rev. Kent Wilson officiating. Burial followed at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Amenia.

On Saturday, Nov. 1, the Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead: El Día de los Muertos.

Mexican Day of the Dead takes place the first weekend of November and honors los difuntos (the deceased) with ofrendas (offerings) on an altar featuring photos of loved ones who have passed on. Elements of earth, wind, fire and water are represented with food, papel picada (colorful decorative paper), candles and tequila left for the beloved deceased. The departed are believed to travel from the spirit world and briefly join the living for a night of remembrance and revelry.
