Pep rally kicks off Gilbert fall sports season

WINSTED — The Gilbert Yellowjackets kicked off the 2011-12 sports season Thursday, Sept. 9, with a rally at the school. The event, called Jackets Win!, was part pep rally, part orientation. Athletic Director Patrick Cooke took the opportunity to go over the school’s athlete code of conduct handbook.“We always continue to strive for that sort of excellence,” said Cooke. “Athletics plays a big role in student development.”Michael Gamari, who recently retired as athletic director after 26 years, was honored at the event.“When I was teaching classes I encouraged my students to go out for athletics,” Gamari said. “I did manage to get some who were on the fence to go for sports. Many of them would come back to me 10 years later and thank me for encouraging them to go out. If I could give you a message this evening, I would say that if you know anyone who is on the fence, tell them to go out for a sport.”Longtime baseball coach Moe Morhardt stressed the importance of maintaining intensity throughout the season.“Every school year starts with a lot of enthusiasm,” Morhardt said. “The trick is that, when work piles up and tests pile up, to keep the enthusiasm going. It takes a lot of work, but you can take it through the season all the way to the state finals.”
