Perotti will join incumbents on NC Board of Selectmen

NORTH CANAAN — The last-minute addition of a new candidate forced a race for the Board of Selectmen, and some unusual campaigning in the final days and hours before the Nov. 3 election.

In the final tally, independent candidate Nicole Blass did not win a seat, but came away with respectable support — 73 votes — for her last-minute write-in candidacy.

Incumbent Republican First Selectman Doug Humes retains his seat for a 12th term, with 545 votes. He will be joined again by Democrat Susie Clayton, with 172 votes; this will be her third term. Republican newcomer Charlie Perotti earned 398 votes. The new board will meet for the first time later this month.

As voters arrived at the polls Nov. 3, poll workers offered an explanation of how to vote with the relatively new scanning machines, using sample ballots posted in the hallway. But, by law, the explanation was limited to pointing out little more than how to vote when more than one person was running for a seat.

Voters who colored in the bubbles next to too many names had their ballot rejected by the optical scanner (about 30 ballots were rejected). The rejected voters then had the opportunity to correct their over-vote.

Blass’ name did not appear on the ballot. There was only an underlined space on the ballot, followed by the words “write-in candidate.

The registrars reported voter turnout of a little more than 30 percent, about the average for the town’s current 1,959 registered voters.

In the two other contested races, Gene Kisielewski, who has sought the office of town treasurer on the Democratic ticket before, was once again unsuccessful against incumbent Jennifer Jacquier.

Nancy O’Connor earned more votes than Lee Baldwin and will take over the Board of Finance seat left vacant by the death of Francis McGuire.

Republican Emily Minacci is the new town treasurer; incumbent Ned Gow declined to run again.

KENT – The cold temperatures and biting winds didn’t deter a crowd from gathering for the annual Veterans Day ceremony Tuesday morning, Nov. 11.

Standing in front of the memorials honoring local residents who served in the military, First Selectman Martin Lindenmayer, himself a veteran, said the day is “not only a time to remember history, but to recognize the people among us—neighbors, friends and family—who have served with courage, sacrifice and devotion. Whether they stood guard in distant lands or supported their comrades from home, their service has preserved the freedoms we enjoy each day.”
