Peter R. Stapf Sr.

PINE PLAINS — Peter R. Stapf Sr., 88, passed away Jan. 17, 2012, at Sharon Health Care Center.He was born in Tuckahoe, N.Y., the son of the late Otilya (Guies) and Joseph Stapf.Mr. Stapf was a machine operator for the town of Pine Plains highway department. He proudly served his country with the U. S. Army.He married Dorothy M. Fountain on Aug. 8, 1948, in Amenia. She predeceased him in 1992. Peter is survived by three sons, Robert Sr. and his wife, Sandra Stapf, of Millerton, Peter R. Jr. and his wife, Donna Stapf, of Niskayuna, N.Y., and John and his wife, Jane Stapf, of Pine Plains; three daughters, Barbara and her husband, Everett Holdridge, of Zephyrhills, Fla., Deborah and her husband, Terry Bryant, of Ancram, and Wendy and her husband, George Lind, of Millerton; 16 grandchildren, Michelle, Robin, Robert Jr., Kristofer, Tammy, Candy, Michael, Donna, Valerie, Renea, Steven, Christopher, Derek, Justin, Jessica and Jason; 18 great-grandchildren, Zachary, Adriana, MacKenzie, Addison, Nicholas, Matthew, Samantha, Sarah, Emily, Kaleb, Cameron, Hannah, Ava, Cecilia, Brianna, Jaylen, Alexis and Luke. There are no calling hours.A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family. On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
