Philip M. Gargan

CORNWALL — Philip M. “Gar” Gargan of Cornwall Hollow died peacefully at Sharon Hospital, surrounded by his family, on Oct. 5, 2016.

Originally of Kilkenny, Ireland, Phil arrived in New York City in 1958 and with his wife, Mary, moved to Washington, Conn., in 1962.

A butcher by trade, he continued this work until his retirement in 1992.

Gar was passionate about tennis — playing, watching and teaching. His love for the small towns of Washington, Roxbury, Warren, Kent and Cornwall was evident.

Philip is survived by Mary, his wife of 55 years; his daughters, Oona and her husband, Austa Falconer, of Milpitas, Calif., and Eileen and her husband, Michael Redmond, of Cornwall Hollow; his son, David, of Lake Worth, Fla.; and his beloved grandchildren, Kathleen and Hilary Rogers and Alex and Susie Cadorin.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in Cornwall Bridge at Saint Bridget Church on Saturday, Oct. 8.

Dee Salomon

After moving to West Cornwall in 2012, we were given a thoughtful housewarming gift: the 1997 edition of “Dirr’s Hardy Trees and Shrubs.” We were told the encyclopedic volume was the definitive gardener’s reference guide — a fact I already knew, having purchased one several months earlier at the recommendation of a gardener I admire.

At the time, we were in the thick of winter invasive removal, and I enjoyed reading and dreaming about the trees and shrubs I could plant to fill in the bare spots where the bittersweet, barberry, multiflora rose and other invasive plants had been.Years later, I purchased the 2011 edition, updated and inclusive of plants for warm climates.
