Phyllis H. Wojan

LITCHFIELD — This corrected obituary supersedes the previously printed obituary submitted by Dolores Schiesel of Cramer & Anderson and Laurie Doss of Marvelwood School.

Phyllis H. Wojan passed away on the afternoon of Oct. 29, 2019, from metastatic breast cancer at the Brandywine Living at Litchfield.

Mrs. Wojan, born May 4, 1924, was the daughter of Emilie and Richmond Hoecker of Brooklyn, N.Y. On Aug. 17, 1946, she married Clifford A. Wojan, who predeceased her on May 1, 2000. She was graduated from Barnard College with a Bachelor’s Degree in English(1946) and from Pratt Institute with a Master’s Degree (1971) in Library Science.

After working for the New York Herald Tribune city desk during college, she started as a secretary at CBS, eventually becoming a senior staff writer for the sales presentation department there. She moved to RKO and finally to freelance before leaving the field to raise her daughter.

In 1972, her family moved to Cornwall Bridge permanently so she began her employment at The Hotchkiss School as the assistant school librarian, where she remained for several years. She joined the Marvelwood School as a library consultant and then taught Latin and zoology for a decade before retirement.

When her daughter departed for college without her pets, Mrs. Wojan became interested, and ultimately, obsessed with all things mouse. Although, she never published any papers in scientific journals nor contributed any animals to research laboratories, she enthusiastically shared her amateur genetic knowledge with anyone willing to listen, including her adult students at the Taconic Learning Center.

Mr. and Mrs. Wojan supported environmental causes through Weantinoge Heritage Land Trust and Housatonic Valley Association.

Their real grass roots contribution along with Joan Terrall of Cornwall Bridge was the effort that they all spearheaded to ban DDT in Connecticut, which was documented by United Nations filmmaker Peter Hollander.

Mrs. Wojan is survived by her brother, Roy Hoecker; her daughter, Lisa Wojan DVM; her son-in-law, Joseph Struckus PhD; as well as her niece, Holly Hensley; two grandnieces; her adopted niece and nephew; and numerous cousins.

SALISBURY — Salisbury expanded its affordable housing stock in 2025 with the addition of four new three-bedroom homes developed by the Salisbury Housing Trust. Two of the homes were built at 26 and 28 Undermountain Rd, with another two constructed at the top of Perry Street in Lakeville.

Motorists and students from The Hotchkiss School will soon benefit from a new sidewalk along Sharon Road (Route 41) connecting the school to Lakeville village. In November, Salisbury was awarded $800,000 in state funding to construct the sidewalk along the southbound side of the road, linking it to the existing sidewalk between Main Street and Wells Hill Road.
