Pine Plains School District owes $1 million in bullying lawsuit

PINE PLAINS — On Monday, Dec. 3, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a $1 million award to Anthony Zeno against the Pine Plains Central School District for Zeno’s alleged harassment during his time as a student at Stissing Mountain High School. The original lawsuit filed by Zeno alleges more than three and a half years of abuse from fellow students including racial remarks, which was allegedly ignored by the district, according to the original filed document. The alleged harassment took place when Zeno moved into the district from Long Island in January 2005, when he was 16 years old.The district has refrained from commenting as the Board of Education and Superintendent Linda Kaumeyer had not met with lawyers or representatives from their insurance agency as of the Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 5.Jim Porell, an audience member at the meeting, asked the board, “Where does $1 million come from for this Zeno case?”“We are not at liberty to discuss the particulars of that incident as we have not yet met with our attorneys or the insurance agency,” Kaumeyer said.Porell rephrased his question in attempt to get a more clear answer.“In a theoretical case against the district, let’s say in the amount of $1 million, where would that money come from?” he asked.“Generally speaking, in a hypothetical situation, our insurance may cover it. It may also come from certain line items that are used for this purpose,” said Kaumeyer. The Board of Education had scheduled a special meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 11, in which the board immediately entered executive session to discuss “pending or current litigation,” according to the agenda.
