Pink's NFL Picks

This week’s record: 9-7; for the season: 122-65.

Pick of the week: 1-0; for the season, 10-3.

It’s obvious that I’m slumping a bit, a direct result of trying to pick upsets and going with my heart instead of my head. Once again, my Pick of the Week came in, and that’s a plus. My Giants and Steelers also won.

The Giants and Titans are poised to win their respective division championships, and I guess you have to throw Arizona into that group as well. All the remaining division races and Wild Card berths are up for grabs, so there’s no shortage of important games coming up in the closing weeks of the regular season. I’m feeling good about this week’s games, so let’s get it on.

Thursday, Dec. 4

Oakland at San Diego — With any luck, maybe UConn is playing hoops this Thursday. With that said, it’s hard to envision the Chargers losing at home to the Raiders. It’s been a tough year for San Diego, but pride should prevail. I’ll take the Chargers, 31-20.

Sunday, Dec. 7

Minnesota at Detroit — I would love to take Detroit on D-Day, but not after watching the team’s Thanksgiving performance. The Lions are in worse shape than the auto industry. The Vikings get the nod, 23-10.

Cleveland at Tennessee — The Titans should win this game. Cleveland will play tough, but not tough enough. I like the Titans, 17-9.

Houston at Green Bay — The Texans are coming off a nice win over the Jags, but now must go on the road to face the Packers. Don’t be surprised to see a great, high-scoring game. I think the Pack comes out on top, 37-33.

Atlanta at New Orleans — I’ve been pulling for these teams all year. This game means a lot to both organizations, but more to the Falcons. The Saints are very tough at home, though, and I think they will protect the home turf. I’ll like New Orleans, 34-27.

Jacksonville at Chicago — Both teams appear headed for the sidelines rather than the playoffs, but you never know when it comes to the NFC North. The Bears are still alive and that should provide enough incentive for a 23-13 win.

Philadelphia at New York Giants — The Giants have passed every test so far and this week will be no exception. The Eagles and McNabb woke up against the Cards on T-Day, but New York will put them back to sleep. I like the Giants, 24-13.

Cincinnati at Indianapolis — There should be no surprises in this game. The Colts are leading the Wild Card chase and can’t afford an upset here. As for the Bengals, they’re just plain horrible. I’ll take the Colts, 24-6.

Miami at Buffalo — The play of both teams has been surprising. For the Dolphins, no one expected them to be winning, and no one would have predicted the tailspin the Bills are in. These are my two favorite teams in the AFC East, but someone has to lose. I’ll stick with the Bills, 19-13.

New England at Seattle — You can never count out a home team, but Seattle continues to struggle. The Patriots have to win to keep pace in the Wild Card race. If Randy Moss didn’t drop a couple of key passes early on against the Steelers, the outcome of that game may have been different. I’ll stick with New England, 27-21.

New York Jets at San Francisco — Jets rhymes with Mets and that could spell trouble. New York had no business losing to the Broncos and now must go on the road to play the 49ers, who are showing signs of life under Mike Singletary. I would love to see the 49ers win, but I truly think the Jets will find a way to prevail. I’ll stick with New York, 23-20.

Kansas City at Denver — You must give the Broncos credit for beating the Jets, but they remain one of the most unpredictable teams in the NFL. The Chiefs are bad, but keep in mind this is an old rivalry game. I like the Broncos, 17-13.

Dallas at Pittsburgh — This is one heart pick that I must make. Although I like the Steelers, Dallas is on the move and it would not surprise me to see them win this game. However, the Steelers are capable of rattling Tony Romo and that could lead to costly mistakes. With that said, I’m sticking with the Steelers, 27-23.

St. Louis at Arizona — This is just the tonic the Cards need. Arizona is still three games up in their division and this is a game they should win easily. I’ll take the Cards, 37-17.

Washington at Baltimore — Sorry Redskins fans, but there’s a good chance you’re out of the playoff picture after this week. I do not like the Ravens, but it seems to me they are improving each week on offense. Combine that with their formidable defense and they’re a tough team to beat. I’ll go with the Ravens, 21-16.

Monday, Dec. 8

Tampa Bay at Carolina — This should be a great game between two evenly matched teams. The Bucs have managed to win close games, while the Panthers have shown they can be explosive. I’m giving the edge to the home team in this one: Carolina, 23-21.

Walls still surprise me. If you look hard enough, you can find buried treasure.
Marge Parkhurst

After nearly 50 years of painting some of Litchfield County’s oldest homes and landmark properties, Marge Parkhurst has developed an eye for the past—reading the clues left behind in stenciled vines, forgotten bottles and newspapers tucked into walls, each revealing a small but vivid piece of Connecticut history.

Parkhurst was stripping wallpaper in a farmhouse in Colebrook — the kind of historic home she has spent decades restoring — when she noticed something odd. Three layers of paper had already come off — each one a different era’s idea of decoration — and beneath them, just barely visible under dull, off-white plaster, a pattern emerged.
