Pink's NFL Picks : October 30, 2009

Last week’s record, 11-2; for the season, 68-35

Pick of the Week, 0-1; for the season, 4-2

My apologies for not giving you a Pick of the Week last week, but those things happen occasionally. It’s a good thing though, because I think I would have picked the Falcons. In fairness, I’ll take the loss.

Aside from that, I had a good week, and I must admit that I took a real flyer by picking the Chiefs over the Chargers. I’m going to shorten up my football picks this week so that I can add my World Series pick. Here we go.

Sunday, Nov. 1

Cleveland at Chicago — Cleveland continues to struggle, and Chicago is still smarting from the loss to the Bengals. I don’t see the Browns going anywhere with Mangini at the helm. I’ll take the Bears, 23-10.

Seattle at Dallas — Seattle had the week off, and they’ll need it as they run into a Cowboy team that is coming together. I’ll stick with the Cowboys at home, 34-21, as my Pick of the Week.

New York Giants at Philadelphia — I said earlier that this part of the Giant schedule is brutal, and it really doesn’t get any easier the rest of the way. The Eagles will miss Westbrook, so I’ll take the Giants, 21-20.

Houston at Buffalo — Two teams coming off a win and both need another one to get back into their division races. I’m going with the Texans, 34-20 (23-17 if it snows).

St. Louis at Detroit — These two cities had a much better chance of making the World Series than the Super Bowl. Someone has to win, so I’ll take the Lions, 23-17.

Miami at New York Jets — This is payback time for the Jets. Miami will come into New York and play hard, but I like the Jets at home, 24-21.

San Francisco at Indianapolis — This is another tough road game for the Niners and as much as I would like to see them get back on track, it won’t be this week. The Colts win this one, 24-13.

Denver at Baltimore — I’m still not a believer in the Broncos, and I despise the Ravens. Until someone beats them, I’ll have to go with the Broncos, 28-24.

Jacksonville at Tennessee — I guess I’ll go with my heart and the winless team in this one. I’ll take the Titans, 17-13.

Oakland at San Diego — Two weeks ago the Raiders beat the Eagles but followed that up by getting blanked by the Jets. The Chargers are tough to read, but I like them in this game, 33-17.

Minnesota at Green Bay — The Vikings’ bubble has burst, and the Packers appear to be getting stronger. I’ll go with the Packers as my second Pick of the Week, 28-24.

Carolina at Arizona — Carolina appears to be going nowhere, while the Cards are starting to roll. I’ll stick with the Cards, 30-17.

Monday, Nov. 2

Atlanta at New Orleans — This is probably the game of the week, and until they lose, I’m going with the Saints. Saints continue to cruise, 33-21.

The artist called ransome

‘Migration Collage' by ransome

Alexander Wilburn

If you claim a single sobriquet as your artistic moniker, you’re already in a club with some big names, from Zendaya to Beyoncé to the mysterious Banksy. At Geary, the contemporary art gallery in Millerton founded by New Yorkers Jack Geary and Dolly Bross Geary, a new installation and painting exhibition titled “The Bitter and the Sweet” showcases the work of the artist known only as ransome — all lowercase, like the nom de plume of the late Black American social critic bell hooks.

Currently based in Rhinebeck, N.Y., ransome’s work looks farther South and farther back — to The Great Migration, when Jim Crow laws, racial segregation, and the public violence of lynching paved the way for over six million Black Americans to seek haven in northern cities, particularly New York urban areas, like Brooklyn and Baltimore. The Great Migration took place from the turn of the 20th century up through the 1970s, and ransome’s own life is a reflection of the final wave — born in North Carolina, he found a new home in his youth in New Jersey.
