Police rent trailer for situation training

WINSTED — The Winchester Police Department rented a state-of-the-art trailer for weapons and situation training on Monday, Jan. 25, and Tuesday, Jan 26.

The trailer was rented from Blue Line Corp. of Sudbury, Mass. According to the company’s website, Blue Line offers a mobile firearms training range inside a 48-foot trailer.

The company website advertises the trailer as 100 percent ballistically lined for safety and fully insulated for sound reduction, with a ventilation system that is OSHA compliant.

On Jan. 25 and Jan. 26, the trailer was parked next to Town Hall on one of its two driveways.

According to Police Sergeant Robert Varasconi, the department used $2,800 from its own funds for the training.

“It is a state-of-the-art training tool,” Varasconi said. “People can shoot live rounds in the trailer safely, and the training includes different types of shooting that we go through. In the training there are different types of scenarios that our officers can go through. All of them are real-life scenarios that you would prepare for on the street. It’s a great teaching tool to use because it teaches you how to respond to the scenario.

“The thing with this type of training is that you can use less lethal force if needed,” he said. “In some scenarios there could be no force at all, just commands. There is also training in night shooting where you have low-level or no-level lighting. You will be shooting at targets in these scenarios.”

Varasconi said that on Jan. 25 he went through two training sessions.

“I found it to be immensely beneficial to have this kind of training,” he said. “It’s more than just shooting at paper targets. It shows your strengths and weaknesses. If you have any kind of weakness, or if your shooting is off or if you are not observant, you learn a lot. Any kind of training will make us better for any bad situation. The ultimate goal is to make the public feel safe. In order to do that, sometimes we have to do training that makes us keep sharp.”
