Criminal mischief complaints

On Tuesday evening, Dec. 23, Deputy Ryan Griffin of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office responded to Beilke Road in the town of North East for a complaint of criminal mischief. Officer David Rudin from the Millerton Village Police Department responded to assist Deputy Griffin, as he had an ongoing investigation into over 25 to 30 incidents of criminal mischief, involving mailbox damage and beer bottles being thrown at windows of vehicles and structures. There was also an incident of a mailbox being thrown at a parked vehicle as well. Most of the damage is believed to have occurred on Saturday night into Sunday morning. (Dec. 20 to Dec. 21)

A joint investigation was done by the Sheriff’s Office and Millerton Police Department which lead to the arrest of an 18-year-old town of North East resident and a 17-year-old Pittsfield, Mass., resident. The names are not being released as they may be eligible for youthful offender status.

The teens were charged with (misdemeanor) criminal mischief and given appearance tickets to appear in the town of North East Court in January. At this time, it is believed that total damage to property is in the thousands of dollars.

The mailbox damage and vehicle damage was done to residents living in the town of North East, the town of Pine Plains and residents in Connecticut. Notification was given to the Connecticut State Police and the town of Pine Plains Police for their investigations of similar incidents in those jurisdictions. Town of North East residents were affected on Beilke Road, Merwin Road, Rudd Pond Road and Skunks Misery Road. There may be additional roads/residences affected, and all affected residents should contact the Millerton Village Police Department, the town of Pine Plains Police Department or the Connecticut State Police for any damage that has been unreported. Should any resident be unaware of what jurisdiction handles their area, they can contact the Millerton Police Department at 518-789-6355. All residents are encouraged to contact the police, so that their damage can be included in this investigation.
