Pre-Thanksgiving dinner is a successful fundraiser

COLEBROOK —  On Sunday, Nov. 13, Northwest YMCA’s Camp Jewell held its 54th annual pre-Thanksgiving dinner at the Walter Malins Dining Hall.

The hall was decked out in autumnal decorations and centerpieces that had been made especially for the event. Grace was said and volunteers delivered the food to the tables on big platters. More than 300 people attended the event, feasting on turkey and stuffing with gravy and fresh green vegetables among other Thanksgiving staples. 

“Volunteers were here all weekend working hard raking and splitting wood,” said Camp Jewell executive director Ray Zetye. “We also worked on one of our program halls, and we’re also building a memorial for former camp program director Case McCrea, who recently passed away.” 

Zetye said the work weekend is an annual tradition for the camp. “A place like this doesn’t run on staff alone,” said Bear Bryant, executive director of Camp Sloane in Lakeville, who was there with his family for the meal. “I was also happy to be here for the memorial for my friend Case.”

“This dinner is all about the people who are here,” said Camp Jewell food service director Steve Faunce. “It’s the one way we can give back to them. We’ve been preparing all week. It’s a labor of love for the kitchen.” 

“It’s an amazing event,” said Lisa Coyne, who is part of the Camp Jewell food service crew. “This is a very special place. My kids grew up here, and my grandkids are coming soon.” 

“This dinner is also the kickoff to our fundraising for the year,” Zetye said. “We raise over $650,000 every year, which allows us to send 500 kids to camp for a two-week session over the summer.”

In light of rising local interest in the centuries-old game of Backgammon, Wednesday afternoon backgammon instruction and play sessions are being offered at The Hotchkiss Library of Sharon. The first such session was held on Wednesday, Aug. 13, attracting two enthusiastic participants, both of whom resolved to return for the weekly sessions.

Expert player and instructor Roger Lourie of Sharon, along with his equally expert wife, Claude, led the session, jumping right into the action of playing the game. Claude chose to pair with Janet Kaufman of Salisbury, a moderately experienced player looking to improve her skills, while Lourie teamed himself with Pam Jarvis of Sharon, who was new to the game.
