Primaries unusually busy

Voting officials said that an unusually high number of residents voted in this year’s primaries in Amenia and the town of North East.

In Amenia, poll worker George Wilkens said the day was extremely busy.

“Usually we only have 10 percent of voters for the primary. As of 6:30 p.m. we’ve had over 15 percent,� Wilkens said. “That’s a lot for the primary. There’s been lines on occasions throughout the day.�

According to the Dutchess County Board of Elections, the unofficial results are as follows:

In Amenia

Democratic town council: Joel Pelky won the Democratic town council race with 136 votes, followed by Bob Riemer with 134 votes and Vicki Doyle with 130 votes.

Republican town council: Norm Cayea won with 163 votes, followed by Vicki Doyle with 156 votes, Michael Chamberlin with 143 votes and Evelyn O’Connell with 136 votes.

District 3 County Committee Democratic representative: Janet Reagon won with 20 votes followed by Ralph Vinchiarello and Gail Hermosilla, both with 16 votes.

District 4 County Council: Susan Gregory won with 43 votes, followed by Deborah Downey with 38 votes and James Walsh with 36 votes.

District 2 County Committee Republican representative: Jeanne Rebillard won with 48 votes, followed by Mark Doyle with 40 votes, Mary Mahaffey with 37 votes and Cindy Thomas with 36 votes.

District 3 County Committee Republican representative: Michael Chamberlin won wih 40 votes, followed by Vernon Fish with 31 votes, Timothy Osborne with 21 votes and William Werner with 14 votes.

In North East

Republican town supervisor: David Sherman won with 90 votes followed by Stanley Chase with 82 votes.

Republican town council: David McGhee Sr. won with 127 votes, followed by Carl Stahovec with 88 votes and Charles Barrett with 86 votes.

According to the board of elections, these primary election results are unofficial and not final.

NORFOLK — Robert J. Pallone, 69, of Perkins St. passed away April 12, 2024, at St. Vincent Medical Center. He was a loving, eccentric CPA. He was kind and compassionate. If you ever needed anything, Bob would be right there. He touched many lives and even saved one.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
