Railroad Days is on track

NORTH CANAAN — The North Canaan Railroad Days will be held from July 8 to 17. There will be entertainment, food, tag sales and games sponsored by North Canaan businesses. Some of the events are highlighted below. The Commerford’s Carnival at Lawrence Field will be from July 8 to 10. There will be carnival rides, games, a petting zoo and elephant and camel rides. Food will be sold by Kristen Marie’s and the Northwest Detachment Marine Corps League to benefit its scholarship fund.The Canaan Fire Company will sponsor bingo at the Lawrence Field Pavilion July 13 to 15 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. St. Joseph Church’s annual tag sale will be held Friday, July 15, from 9 to 3 p.m. at the Bitterman Center. Later that day, the Connecticut Railroad Historical Association will sponsor a chicken barbecue fundraiser at Canaan Union Station from 5 to 8 p.m. . Adults eat for $12 and children under 5 eat for free. The proceeds will go to the rebuilding of the Canaan Union Station.On Saturday, July 16, at 6 p.m. the Canaan Fire Company will hold its annual fireman’s parade. Boy Scout Troop 22 will sell glow rings at dusk to prepare for the fireworks sponsored by the Canaan Chamber of Commerce and the town of North Canaan.The Canaan Family YMCA is sponsoring the Canaan 5-Mile Road Race on July 17. The race will begin at Lawrence Field Pavilion at 9 a.m. . There is a 5-mile run/walk as well as 2- and 1-mile options. Judge throws out zoning challenge tied to Wake Robin Inn expansion

A judge recently dismissed one lawsuit tied to the proposed redevelopment, but a separate court appeal of the project’s approval is still pending.

LAKEVILLE — A Connecticut Superior Court judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed against Salisbury’s Planning and Zoning Commission challenging a zoning amendment tied to the controversial expansion of the Wake Robin Inn.

The case focused on a 2024 zoning regulation adopted by the P&Z that allows hotel development in the Rural Residential 1 zone, where the historic Wake Robin Inn is located. That amendment provided the legal basis for the commission’s approval of the project in October 2025; had the lawsuit succeeded, the redevelopment would have been halted.

On a recent mid-January afternoon, with the clouds parted and the snow momentarily cleared, I pointed my car northwest toward Hudson with a simple goal: to get out of the house and see something beautiful.

My destination was the Olana State Historic Site, the hilltop home of 19th-century landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church. What I found there was not just a welcome winter outing, but a reminder that beauty — expansive, restorative beauty — does not hibernate.

Housy ski team wins at Mohawk

CORNWALL — Mohawk Mountain hosted a meet of the Berkshire Hills Ski League Wednesday, Jan. 28.

Housatonic Valley Regional High School earned its first team victory of the season. Individually for the Mountaineers, Meadow Moerschell placed 2nd, Winter Cheney placed 3rd, Elden Grace placed 6th and Ian Thomen placed 12th.

Harding launches 2026 campaign

NEW MILFORD — State Sen. and Minority Leader Stephen Harding announced Jan. 20 the launch of his re-election campaign for the state’s 30th Senate District.

Harding was first elected to the State Senate in November 2022. He previously served in the House beginning in 2015. He is an attorney from New Milford.
