Rebuilding Together Dutchess County supports county homeowners

PINE PLAINS — Volunteers came together to lend their neighbors a helping hand at Rebuilding Together Dutchess County’s (RTDC) annual Fall Rebuilding Month in October to complete necessary repairs for six local homeowners, including one in the town of Pine Plains.

Aimed at repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives, RTDC provides critical home repairs free of charge to low-income homeowners to allow them to live independently in a warm, safe and dry environment.

In October, RTDC and its volunteers completed seven projects in Poughkeepsie, Fishkill, Wappingers Falls, Pleasant Valley and Pine Plains. They also completed more than 50 home safety and fire prevention projects throughout the county and served the Hudson Valley House of Hope through its Community Strong Program, which aims to cultivate the spirit of volunteerism and community support.

While RTDC intended to complete home repairs for Mary Bowen’s home in Pine Plains on Saturday, Oct. 27, the work was rescheduled to Friday, Oct. 26, due to rain in the forecast.

Among some of the home repairs completed at the Pine Plains residence, volunteers repaired and replaced the remaining exterior siding at the back of the house. Steps were installed going down into the basement while grab bars were installed in the bathroom and hand rails were installed in her bedroom.

Consigli Construction employees created a drainage system for Bowen’s home and a concrete walkway was poured to make sure she could get in and out of her home safely. Volunteers also completed a couple of electrical upgrades and window replacements.

A resident of Pine Plains for the last 17 years, Bowen, 69, expressed her thanks for all of the work, including the hand rails that will now allow her to maintain her balance. She said she was brought to tears by the sight of all the volunteers working together to improve her home; she baked them chocolate chip cookies as a token of her gratitude.

“They were all so wonderful and so sweet,” Bowen said. “Everything they’ve done to my house so that I could live here, God willing, till the day that I die, I can’t thank them enough.”

By the end of the season, RTDC Executive Director Christina Boryk counted more than 150 volunteers who contributed to the Fall Rebuilding Month program.

“I think what makes our Rebuilding Month so unique is not only are we impacting the lives of the homeowners… but we also bring out over 100 volunteers to accomplish that goal,” Boryk said, “so it really gives all of the community a sense of being able to help their neighbors in a single day.”

Boryk said applications for next year’s Rebuilding Day program will be available in the spring, though applications for the Home Safety & Fire Prevention program are open year round.

When the guide gets it wrong

Rosa setigera is a native climbing rose whose simple flowers allow bees to easily collect pollen.

Dee Salomon

After moving to West Cornwall in 2012, we were given a thoughtful housewarming gift: the 1997 edition of “Dirr’s Hardy Trees and Shrubs.” We were told the encyclopedic volume was the definitive gardener’s reference guide — a fact I already knew, having purchased one several months earlier at the recommendation of a gardener I admire.

At the time, we were in the thick of winter invasive removal, and I enjoyed reading and dreaming about the trees and shrubs I could plant to fill in the bare spots where the bittersweet, barberry, multiflora rose and other invasive plants had been.Years later, I purchased the 2011 edition, updated and inclusive of plants for warm climates.
